Dean's Message

Traditional Chinese Medicine Sciences as an crystallization of the wisdom of the Chinese nation, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is not only a splendid gem of ancient Chinese science, but also a key to unlocking the treasure trove of Chinese civilization. Since its establishment, Macau University of Science and Technology has regarded TCM as one of its core development areas. The Faculty of Chinese Medicine was founded at the university’s inception in 2000, launching the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine programme. In response to the development needs of the Greater Health Industry in the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme in Chinese Materia Medica was subsequently introduced.
At present, the Faculty has established a complete education system spanning from undergraduate to doctoral levels, including master’s and doctoral programmes in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. It has cultivated a large number of TCM professionals for Macao and broader regions, driving the sustained progress of the industry.
In 2011, backed by the status of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (renamed the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality Research in Chinese Materia Medica in 2025), the Faculty of Chinese Medicine became the first academic institution to deliver higher education relying on a state key laboratory. In recent years, through global recruitment, the Faculty has assembled outstanding scholars and experts covering multidisciplinary fields, forming a teaching and research team composed of Nobel laureates, academicians, chair professors and others, laying a solid foundation for nurturing top-tier TCM talents. Meanwhile, the Faculty shares cutting-edge research facilities with the state key laboratory, ensuring continuous improvement in teaching quality and research standards.
Adhering to the philosophy of “Integration for Excellence”, the Faculty fully leverages Macau University of Science and Technology’s comprehensive strengths in academics, scientific research, internationalization and innovation culture, exploring a path for TCM talent cultivation that respects tradition while embracing innovation. The curriculum design emphasizes the integration of heritage and innovation, broad knowledge and professional expertise, as well as Chinese and Western medicine, forming a three-in-one teaching model. Equal emphasis is placed on theory and practice; students are encouraged to engage in clinical practice at an early stage to continuously strengthen clinical thinking and problem-solving abilities. In scientific research, the Faculty upholds the principle of combining tradition and modernity, committed to advancing both basic research and clinical applications.
Therefore, this is a Faculty with both Chinese and Western characteristics, where traditional and modern medicine converge. Faculty members impart knowledge while pursuing innovation, and students grow into well-rounded professionals with both moral integrity and professional competence nurtured by multiculturalism. It is not only a place for inheriting medical knowledge, but also a cradle for nurturing new ideas and technologies. Members of the Faculty are deeply aware of their responsibilities: treating every life with the utmost kindness, whether in healing illnesses, providing care, or offering comfort. Here, we jointly pursue excellence, practice benevolence and skilled medical treatment, and strive to enhance public health and well-being.
Faced with the dual opportunities brought by the national development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the revitalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Macau University of Science and Technology — an educational institution rooted in the motherland and open to the world — has entrusted its Faculty of Chinese Medicine with the important mission of cultivating interdisciplinary TCM talents with an international vision. We sincerely invite aspiring individuals to join us in writing a new chapter of Chinese medicine on this promising land and building a healthy future together!
Braving the wind and waves, setting sail with ambition, let us move forward hand in hand to embrace an even more brilliant tomorrow!
